The Flos Arco Floor Lamp, designed by Achille Castiglioni and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni. FL20
Born
in Milan in 1918, Achille Castiglioni graduated in architecture in 1944 and
dedicated himself to architecture, urban planning and design with his brothers
Livio ((1911-1979) and Pier Giacomo (1913-1968). Together they experimented
with new forms, techniques and materials, aimed at developing a process of
"integral design". In 1969 he was nominated Professor of Artistic
Industrial Design; he chaired the Faculty of Architecture in Turin until 1980
and taught in Milan until 1993 as Professor of Industrial Design at the
Polytechnic of Milan. MoMA’s permanent collection in New York holds fourteen of
their works.
A
street light inspired the iconic "Arco", a suspension lamp that sits
on the floor on an extremely heavy marble base. The hole in the base is to
insert a sturdy broomstick for carrying. Castiglioni once said of the base:
"Our first idea was concrete, but we chose marble because it gave us the
same weight in a smaller volume and a better finish for a lower cost. Nothing
in Arco is decorative. Even the bevelled corners of the base are functional,
they avoid sharp angles, which could be dangerous." Castiglioni designed
Arco exclusively for flos and has been in continuous production since 1962.
Arco is a design landmark which continues to inspire and excite new
generations.
This
loft is fun, happy, and full of life. Great unusual design The Arco Floor Lamp,
powerful visual senses have to pay attention, it has its own unique charm and
originality. In this space, the various textures and hues of wood work
beautifully with the exposed brick. The various metal, leather, and artistic
artifacts are brilliantly placed together to create an entertaining atmosphere
similar to an amusement park placed in an environment built for relaxation and
living.
